Abstract
Local job growth varies widely across the U.S., with proximity to urban centers as one of the primary influences (Ioannides and Overman). The size, type, and geographic extent of agglomeration (dis)economies may, however, vary spatially due to variations in industry mix, local competition, transportation access, topography, amenities and labor force characteristics. While global estimates of the relationships between county growth and urban proximity are informative, an understanding of their local variations is essential to policymakers.
